The McMaster University study published Nov. 17 looked to answer why income disparity persists in family medicine when OHIP pays the same regardless of gender, race and immigration status.
What it found was patients are believed to have different expectations depending on the gender and culture of the physician. Doctors change their practice to meet those perceived needs.
“Physicians responded to the expectations of their patients,” said Meredith Vanstone, an author on the study and a McMaster professor in family medicine.
